We watered and nurtured those seeds until they blossomed into brightly colored splashes of red, yellow, orange, and white flowers and sturdy green shrubs. But the job had just begun: now we had to keep the garden looking that way. We had to maintain the garden by relentlessly removing weeds as quickly as they reared their ugly heads. Then we watered and fed the soil with nutrients to sustain the plants. It took constant vigilance and discipline to keep those beautiful plants growing. Sometimes the process could be painstakingly difficult and frustrating. Things didn’t always go according to plan. But every time we gazed upon that garden, we knew that we had done something beautiful and lasting together.
